Today the day that first sermon illuminated the world


Today is an Esala Full moon poya day. Today the day Our Great Teacher stated his public ministry at the Saranatha (Baranesa) Migadaya in India. 

The most prominent teaching of the Buddha’s preaching of his First Sermon, the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta, to five ascetics thereby inaugurating his public ministry. 

The Buddha, who had gained enlightenment at Gaya, was concerned with only on one thing the way to end all methods of suffering on earth. That is why he tends to discover the way of session of the suffering, and he was discovered it and preached it to public.  


The noble truth of suffering

  • Birth is suffering,
  • pain of mind and body is suffering,
  • Illness is suffering,
  • association with the unpleasant (people) is suffering
  • loss of wealth and disassociation with the beloved is sufferin
  • when one does not receive what is desired is suffering
  • old age and death is suffering
  • In short, the five fold clinging to craving, attachment is suffering.
Because of the birth we have to face all kind of above pains.

Our Great Teacher has preached about two Extremes of living and he advised, to give up the two extremes of livings. 

That is enjoyment of sensual pleasures and the tormenting of one’s body.

Our Great teacher discovered that the reality of the above two tracks, and he advised not to depend on it, and he invited to understand THE NOBLE EIGHTFOLD PATH which can help man to arrive at Nibbana. 


Other essential things of Esala Poyaday

It was on an Esala Full Moon poya day that princes Hemamala and Prince Dantha brought the sacred tooth relic of Buddha to Sri Lanka.



On this day also took place the laying of the foundation for the celebrated dagoba, the Mahastupa or the Ruwanvelisaya and also its enshrinement of relics by King Dutugemunu.
